夜, 15 Oct 2016 - κάθαρσις

ライブハウスで2年ぶりに会った人がいる。
「久しぶりだね。」「今どこかで弾いてる？」
「それどころじゃねえよ。」と彼は言う。
顔を見なかった2年間に、彼はバンドを辞め、仕事も変わり、そして、奥さんが病気でほとんど死ぬところだったのだという。
彼は酔った勢いかもしれないが、「俺のせいだ。」と言う。
そうなのか……と思いつつ、「そんなふうに考えちゃいけない。」と私が言う。
幸いにも快復されたそうだが…。
「あいつが死んだら俺も死のうかと思ったんだよ。」
もうその言葉を聞いたら、女は、どんなつらかったこともすべて、ゆるしてしまおうと思うのかもしれない。
はやく家にお帰り。酔いつぶれる前に。

憧れのライブハウス、ニューヨーク・グリニッジヴィレッジのThe Bottom Lineは、同時多発テロのあおりをくらって2004年に惜しくも閉店してしまったが、1989年開店の名古屋ボトムラインはそのライセンス契約店だそうだ。看板のロゴは同じだし、明るいガラス張りの正面入り口と広いロビーの雰囲気が、いかにもアメリカっぽい。ニューヨークの方は残念ながら入ったことがないのでしかとはわからないが、おそらく天井の高いステージや、バルコニーに囲まれテーブル席の並ぶフロアの造りなどが、本家に似せてあるのだろう。

私にとってボトムラインと言えば、ロリー・ギャラガー1978/79年の男臭くワイルドなライブ録音だ。『Live from the Bottom Line』というFM番組のエアチェック・ブートだったようだ。音響はたいして良くないが、ロリーのかすれ声と客席の大騒ぎが異常に接近していて、それを聴いただけで私は「ボトムラインって、気取ったコンサートホールなんかではなく、きっと煙草の煙と酒の臭いが立ち込める場末のライブハウスなんだろうな。」と想像を掻き立てたものだ。

人には「トンズを追っかけて本当に名古屋まで行くの？」と呆れられもしたが、行ってみたかったボトムライン。スタッフ扱いでバックステージや2階バルコニーにも立ち入らせていただき、良い経験をさせてもらった。
